Asbestos Removal

Marques, S.A. is equipped and licensed by an accredited laboratory to measure concentrations of airborne asbestos fibres.

  • It employs the method recommended by the World Health Organisation (WHO): Determination of Airborne Fibre Number Concentrations. Recommended Method, by Phase-Contrast Optical Microscopy (Membrane Filter Method, Geneva, 1997).
  • National legislation on concentrations of airborne asbestos fibres validating the aforementioned method is contained in Decree Law No. 266/2007 of 24th July, transposing into national law the Directive of the European Parliament and of the Council 2003/18/EC of March 27th and in Regional Legislative Decree No. 12/2009/A of July 28th in the case of the Azores Autonomous Region. Any other method, namely the American NIOSH 1994, is not legally valid in Portugal or the EU.
  • The fibre control laboratory that measures concentrations of airborne asbestos fibres from samples collected by the specialised technicians of Marques S.A. was accredited from 1991 to 2002 by the Portuguese Quality Institute (IPQ) (Accreditation No. 91/L. 66, NP EN 45 001) and since 2002 has been periodically controlled, with regard to the quality of microscopic readings, by the WHO’s Institute of Occupational Medicine (IOM) in Edinburgh.
